Why does newave exist? What is our purpose?
In the briefest of summaries, it is to Save the Planet.
A big goal and to some it might seem arrogant to make such a statement. Nevertheless, it remains our purpose.
When the newave project it was to try and make healthy formulations (starting with lip-balms) and not place them in petroleum based plastic packaging.
At the time, there seemed to be no choice as a consumer other than to buy products in standard petroleum plastic.
We wanted to change that; we wanted people to have a choice with a cosmetic product just as good as any.
Some of the things that concerned us about petroleum-based plastic were:
Research shows that chemicals can leach from petroleum-based plastic packaging into products.
Research shows that petroleum extraction, refining, manufacturing are all problematic for the environment and human health.
Research shows that only 9% of all plastic is being recycled.
Making even more plastic in the hope that it will be recycled seems quite unbelievable.
Research shows that mircoplastics and nanoplastics are damaging the environment and human health.
Petroleum is a finite resource, we have to move away from it to find new / better solutions.
Petroleum based plastic is chosen by major cosmetic companies for many reasons.
One big reason is that it is dirt cheap.
This allows them to maximise profits, make shareholders happy and pay executives millions of dollars.
Commonly called “shareholder supremacy”, these businesses must continue to make increased profits to appease their investors and keep their high paid jobs.
We have no investors, only potential customers looking for a choice to move
away from petroleum filled products and packaging.
Our aim is to provide a great product, with no petroleum
and help change an industry that is reliant on petroleum.
In doing so, we also reduce the amount of plastic in the market, in landfill, on beaches and micro/nano plastics in the air, in our food and inside us.
Our solution is not perfect, we are aware of that and don’t claim it to be.
We know disposal into composting facilities is difficult, however we must try to do and be better and continue creating and making improved solutions.
We may get offside with those that support plastic, they may attack us with words and actions; however we aim to stay true to our purpose / our Why.
