We do not add scents / fragrances to any of our products!
Firstly, we need to clarify that some of our products will have a natural scent
due to the oils or butters that they may contain.
For example, the newave Cocoa Loco lip-balm has cocoa butter
as one of the main ingredients and that it may be possible
to get the scent of chocolate.
Additionally, the Tigress lip-balm contains guava and papaya oils,
which can make the balm smell a little tropical.
As such, where we say unscented, we mean we do not add anything additional
to our formulations to provide a scent.
Our aim is to be as sustainable as possible, and this means
that we try our best to add things to our formulations that are meaningful
to their effectiveness, instead of simply giving a nice smell
(or colour when it comes to some other additives).
Whilst we don’t deny that a scented product can be ok,
it’s just not the product we want to provide
as a choice away from the standard options.
Many standard products contain petroleum-based ingredients
(eg – petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin oil)
and most are packed in petroleum-based plastic.
Many other standard products have scents and colours added.
We want to be unique and empower you to be able to make a better choice.
A choice for your health and the environment.
Not adding scents is part of that.
Scents and colours can also be irritants and cause problems for your skin.
Having noted this, we do not skimp on what we do put in.
We choose the best ingredients, ensuring the best product.
As mentioned, unscented can also be better for your skin health.
So can choosing our compostable packaging,
as opposed to petroleum-based plastic.
Scientific research shows all this and just so you know we are not making it up, here is some proof:
Migration Studies and Endocrine Disrupting Activities: Chemical Safety of Cosmetic Plastic Packaging
AND
Chemical ingredients in cosmetics have raised concerns about hormone disruption (Bilal et al., 2020; Nicolopoulou-Stamati et al., 2015).
Moreover, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA; 2022) acknowledges the potential for skin irritation and allergic reactions linked to certain substances in beauty products, affecting consumers’ well-being.
Microplastics, with nanoparticles found in some cosmetics, pose potential toxicity risks. These nanoparticles raise worries due to their skin penetration abilities and possible adverse effects (Bathi et al., 2022).
Finally, the beauty industry’s prolific use of excessive packaging contributes significantly to environmental degradation and pollution, indirectly affecting human health by exacerbating environmental issues (Chen et al., 2021; Rajkumar, 2015).
The relentless production and subsequent disposal of beauty products have led to releasing detrimental chemicals, such as parabens, phthalates, and formaldehyde, into ecosystems, posing severe ecological and health threats (Bilal, 2020).
Unscented?
newave does not “add” scents to our products.
We feel it makes sense.
