In creating newave, we took a stand.
We wanted to work towards replacing plastic with petroleum free formulations and alternative packaging products, that were better for you and the environment.
Since launching newave some people have asked, “what are you doing for the environment other than selling cosmetics”?
We think one of the main differences is in real advocacy vs virtue signalling.
We like to think of our advocacy for health and the environment could be described as – actioned public support of an idea, plan, or way of doing something.
Where-as virtue signalling could be considered as - attempting to show other people that you are a good person, eg - by expressing opinions that will be acceptable to them, especially on social media.
Probably the main difference here being “action”.
Just some of the action we have taken so far for healthier
cosmetics and a better environment are:
· Released lip-balms, hand cream & body lotion that contain no petroleum-based ingredients
· Released cosmetic packaging that is compostable and contains no petroleum-based plastic, use certified compostable mailer bags, use certified compostable tape and wrap in recycled hex-paper (not tested for compostability).
· Holding a working position on the NSW Committee for the Australian Organic Recycling Association.
· Completed over 100 beach cleans ourselves in the past few years. Including beaches in Newcastle, Perth and Cairns.
· Completed a 2024 submission to Victorian Government on “Household Waste and Recycling Draft Service Standard”.
· Completed a 2024 submission to the NSW Government on “NSW Plastics – Next Steps”.
· Completed a 2024 submission to the NSW Government on “NSW Plastics – The Way Forward”.
· Completed a 2024 submission to the Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on
“Reform packaging regulation consultation paper”
· Completed a submission 2025 submission to the Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on
“Design Standards Working Group Overview”.
· Completed various submission to APCO (the Australian Packaging Covenant), including such individual submissions around packaging design, strategy, compostability, EPR (External Producer Responsibility).
Whilst there is plenty more, I think you get the point.
For each submission, we review each research document and piece of government legislation we cite, and we don’t make hollow statements without factual basis.
When we post information online (eg our website, Linkedin, Facebook etc) we make sure we read the content and not just post for sensationalism.
The world and our climate are changing. The climate particularly is not for the better.
Our work and words are not without thought and meaning when we say, “Save the Planet”.
